Goldenrod Tincture
Goldenrod is a wonderful soothing and healing plant.
Goldenrod blooms in the late summer and early autumn. With its bright yellow flowers and weedy proliferation, it often gets blamed for seasonal allergies. We see yellow pollen on porches, windows, cars, wherever we look — and there’s this very yellow plant that seems to be everywhere too. However, goldenrod’s pollen is too heavy and sticky to move through the air; it requires bees to gather and move it. Goldenrod gets the blame for a weed that blooms at the same time it does, air-pollinated ragweed.
Goldenrod should be associated with allergies, however, but as a plant that can soothe the histamine reaction. Goldenrod can help reduce histamine reactions to pollen and pet dander, making it very helpful to those with environmental allergies. Goldenrod helps reduce symptoms of itchiness, redness, drippy, wet, stagnant mucus in the sinuses and down the throat. Goldenrod, like nettle, contains the antioxidant quercetin. Quercetin stabilizes mast cells that are overactive in unnecessary allergic responses.
The other place Goldenrod really shines as a plant ally is as a kidney and urinary tract support. It is a gently warming herb and this warming movement pairs well with Goldenrod’s diuretic action to flush out the infected area. Goldenrod’s volatile oils help as well. The volatile oils are processed by the urinary system in whole form so their antimicrobial action can support you even as goldenrod is leaving your body. It can help clear minor urinary tract infections, kidney stones, and can reduce internal inflammation. Goldenrod is a strong kidney tonic herb.**
